Lessons, Projects and Portfolio
Hi! I'm RJ, a guitarist with 20 years of experience and a software engineer based out of Urbana, Ohio. I built this website to share information on my guitar lessons, music projects and, well, anything I want really. Thanks for coming!
About
Playing music should be about having fun and that's exactly what I emphasize in my lessons.
Yes, technique, rhythm, lead-playing and tone all take time and patience to develop, but having fun in the process is just as important for making progress.
I cater lessons to each student's goals. If you’re a beginner looking to get started, bring me a few songs you want to learn and we’ll build a curriculum that helps you grow toward playing them confidently.
My own playing is rooted mostly in rock, classic rock, punk, hardcore, post-hardcore, and metal, but I listen to and explore all kinds of music. I'm always happy to dive into the styles that interest my students.
Outside of lessons, I make music, play in local bands, write software and spend time with my wonderful family.

Q&A
Click a question to reveal the answer.
Do you teach beginners?
Yes — I tailor lessons to each student's goals and experience level.
Do you offer remote lessons?
Yes. I teach both in-person and online via Zoom.
What should I bring to my first lesson?
Your instrument, a list of songs you'd like to learn and goals you'd like to accomplish.
What if I need to reschedule a lesson?
Just let me know at least 24 hours in advance and we can find a new time that works.
What's the difference between a 30-minute lesson vs 60-minute lesson?
A 30-minute lesson is great for focused practice on specific skills or songs, while a 60-minute lesson allows for more in-depth instruction and exploration of multiple topics. For example, in 30 minutes I can show you how to play a G chord. In 60 minutes I can show you why a G chord is a G chord, how to use it in different songs and how to make it sound good.
